Behind The Sugar: Nay’s Killer Cakes

Today on the blog, we are going behind the sugar with Nay’s Killer Cakes.  I’m so excited to share my chat with the owner behind all the delicious cakes, cupcakes, and desserts – Shania Metzdorf.

Shania Metdorf is the owner of Nay’s Killer Cakes, specializing in cakes, cupcakes, and decorated cookies for weddings, birthdays, and other special events. I first met Shania on a styled shoot in October 2018. She created the most amazing and delicious cake and mini apple pies for a Christmas themed shoot and captured the mood of the shoot with perfection! Not only were her desserts and cake out of this world, she was absolutely amazing to work with!

What drew you to weddings in particular?

A wedding is one of the most important days of someone’s life and it is very fulfilling to help make their dream wedding a reality!

What’s the best part of your job?

There are rarely any bad days when your job is to be par of your customer’s special day.

What does a normal event day look like for you?

I usually have one other person help with delivery and setup at the venue. Once we arrive, we set up, add any finishing touches, and have the event coordinator (or maid of honor) make sure that the cake is to specification, and sign off.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned and what advice would you give a newbie in the business?

Always be prepared for the worst. You never know when you may need to do a quick touch up. It’s very helpful to always visit your venue prior to delivery and set up.

What are your hobbies and interest outside pf photography?

Spending time with my two year old and husband. Brunchin’ with my girls. Day-tripping to places I’ve never been.

What are your favorite themes/visions to work with?

I always enjoy doing something new! Earthy and natural looks are really in right now and I have been some of my favorite cakes to make.

Any trends you are loving?

The unicorn trend is just so fun right now!

Any good stories you can tell us about a client you’ve worked with?

I’ve have had couples come to me for their wedding cake, then baby shower cake, then baby’s first birthday, and so on. It’s fun to watch couples grown into their own little families.

What questions should a client ask a photographer before hiring them?

You should feel totally comfortable with your baker and feel like you can ask them anything. No questions are off limits.

How far in advance would you suggest couples book their photographer for their wedding?

Couples should book their baker anytime AFTER they book their venue. The reason being, a number of venues require couples to only use the venue’s preferred list of vendors.
